Janome

Known for their Quality

Janome sewing machines, formerly made by the New Home Company, are known for being top quality and for their cutting edge technology.

Janome was the first sewing machine company to develop a computerized sewing machine, the Memory 7 (1979) for home use.

And they were the first to develop a professional style embroidery machine for the home sewing market (Memory Craft 8000 in 1990).

The Janome Company has established a reputation that is hard to beat, and many sewers who have owned Janome sewing machines, are very loyal to the brand!

History of the Janome Company

The company’s history goes back to 1867, when William Barker and Andrew J Clark started producing a machine they called the New England Single Thread Hand Sewing Machine in Orange, Massachusetts.

They later added production of what they called the Home Shuttle.

The company was named New Home, and the company continued to produce sewing machines until 1960 when it was purchased by a Japanese company, the Janome Sewing Machine Company of Tokyo, Japan.

The Janome Company started producing sewing machines that had a round metal bobbin system, instead of the elongated shuttle that had been traditionally used up until that time.

Thinking that the new round bobbins looked like snake eyes, they named the company Janome (pronounced Ja-NO-me), which means “eye of the snake”.

Janome Machines Today

Unlike many of the other sewing machine companies, Janome remains an independent company and produces its own sewing machines. It has sewing divisions in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

In addition to its high tech machines, Janome also produces such innovative products as high precision robots! The company is truly a step ahead of many other sewing machine companies. Myipaddress .
