What to Do with the Stuffing
When You Make Your Own Dog Bed
So, what can you use as filling for your dog bed? Shredded foam fill works well. There are a couple of things to keep in mind when you are using it, though.
- When it arrives, the foam is compressed into a ball about the size of a large basketball. You will have to separate the pieces, which are locked together tightly. This is a very messy process, so make sure you do it on a sheet or drop cloth (or inside your new dog bed). The little pieces are hard to pick up if you drop them.
- There are some hard crusty pieces in the foam. This doesn’t seem to bother the dogs, and people have even used the foam for pillows, without complaint. So just ignore the hard pieces and don’t spend time trying to remove them.
- Order the right amount. A 5 pound ball of shredded foam will fill a large dog bed, about 5 to 8 inches high. Even heavier dogs will find this to be comfortable. You’ll need less for a smaller dog bed.
There are other ways to stuff your dog bed. You can use fiberfill or fiber, which is softer than foam, and, you can also use cedar shavings, which give off a pleasant odor and also help to repel dog pests like fleas.
Whether you decide to make your own dog bed or a dog pillow, you will find this project to be an easy one. And, since you have so many choices for fabrics, you’ll have a finished dog bed that complements the rest of your home décor!
