Sewing Machine Tables Define Your Sewing Space

Sewing machine tables and desks offer a way to sew without taking up a whole room in your home. Most of them have a way to make them more compact, and they are relatively inexpensive, as well.

Tables may even fold, so that they can be stored in a small space like a closet, while sewing machine desks may fold into a compact cabinet, but probably won’t fit into a closet.

Sewing machine tables and desks have some similarities and some differences. Here are some for you to consider:

  • Adjustable height – Usually sewing machine tables have a way to adjust the height, so that you can sew at a height that is comfortable for you. A desk has one height.
  • Assembly required – You can expect to assemble a desk and some of the sewing machine tables, as there is no way to ship these items by UPS or the US Postal Service, in one piece.A few tables can be shipped intact, especially if they are folding tables. If assembly is important to you, make sure you read the details to see if you will need to put your new table together.

A sewing machine desk has a flat table top.

  • Drawers – Sewing machine tables usually don’t have drawers, but desks do. There is one table that has 3 small drawers, but these are not particularly sturdy.
  • Wheels – You may find wheels on either sewing machine tables or desks.
  • Folding – Sewing machine tables may fold, and desks may contract into a smaller piece of furniture.
  • Machine Storage – Some desks have a space for storing your sewing machine, but they do not have an air lift to help you get it onto the table top.  Sewing machine tables often have air lifts to lift your machine onto the work space.
  • Cost – Desks are more expensive than sewing machine tables, but usually less expensive than sewing machine cabinets.
