History of Sewing Buttons
The history of the button is shrouded in mystery. What we do know is that sewing buttons first appeared during the Renaissance.
Before that time period clothing had ties, to keep things in place. Once their useful nature brought them into the marketplace, sewing buttons became more and more ornate, particularly the buttons used for high ranking officials or wealthy households. These early sewing buttons fetch a pretty penny for the collector, but you can buy knock-offs that look almost like the real thing.

Decorative Sewing Buttons
Sewing buttons quickly became more than just a way to fasten clothing. They soon became part of accessories too. From hand bags to shoes and jewelry, buttons were not only a convenience but they were also a fashionable adornment.
Making sewing buttons became an art in its own right, with craftspeople honing their designs, according to timely trends. The wide variety of materials used allowed the fabricator to design sewing buttons that matched specific clothing choices too, like using heavy duty buttons for winter coats.
Sewing buttons are made from many different materials, including plastic, glass, fabric, stone, bone, precious stones, seashells, antler, metals, wood, clay and leather, just to name a few.
No matter what the design is, sewing buttons have two basic configurations. One is a sew-through button that’s flat with several holes through which the seamstress directs a needle and thread. The alternative to flat buttons is a shank button. The shank of the sewing button raises it up from the garment for ease of buttoning and a smooth appearance.
Depending on the type of sewing buttons you choose, you need to remember that some cannot be dry cleaned and some can’t go through the laundry. Just like your fabrics, taking good care of your buttons makes them last longer and stay looking great.
