Features to Look For in a Rotary Cutter
There are several companies that make these rotary cutters, the most popular being Fiskars, Olfa and Alvin. Each company has a slightly different design for its rotary cutter, and some of these features:
- Handles – Handles are often cushioned and some have ergonomic designs which make them easier on your hands, fingers and wrists. Padded or soft handles minimize pressure points.
- Strength – Don’t let some of these designs fool you. Some of these little cutters are quite capable of cutting through multiple layers of fabric, just like they are a warm knife slicing through butter.
- Innovation – There are some really cool cutting ideas. One of my favorites is the Olfa rotary cutter for circles. It makes perfect circles in no time at all.
A rotary cutter is a time saver! - Healthy design for arthritic fingers – The Fiskars fingertip rotary cutter works great for cutting areas with tiny details, especially on delicate fabrics, paper, tissue or foil. But the thing that I like the best about it is that it is great for people who has repetitive stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome or those who have arthritis in their hands.
- Mats – The mats designed to go with these cutters are interesting, also. Many have markings on them that help you cut accurately, and Fiskars has self-healing mats that will increase the life of your cutter blades.
