The Viking Sewing Machine

The first Viking sewing machine was made in 1872 when Husqvarna, who had been making rifles, needed to find a new line.

Thus begins the Husqvarna Viking sew machine history.

The little Swedish factory soon became one of the top sewing machine manufacturers in the world.

The very first model sewing machine was called the “Nordsjernan”, which means, “the Northern Star”.

We are so used to our machines sewing stitches in a straight line that it's hard to appreciate that, in 1883, it was a big deal when the Husqvarna company invented the Freja model that could sew straight lines.

The Freja was manufactured until 1953.

In 1947, Husqvarna introduced the Husqvarna Zig Zag. It also had a free arm, which allowed the user to sew small circular objects, like sleeves.

The Husqvarna Centennial series was born. It featured a Viking sewing machine that was lubrication-free. The new machine also had open thread guides, an easy to adjust foot pressure, snap-on feet and micro-adjustment for buttonholes.

Husqvarna Viking and Computer Machines

With model 6680 Viking entered the computer age. This Husqvarna sewing machine used a micro-computer to electronically guide its stitch patterns. The next generation, model 6690, became the world's first “writing machine”, so named because it was able to sew letters.

The Husqvarna Viking Orchidea (1994) added such features as: one touch direct stitch selection, Sewing Advisor, Infodisplay, Program and Display. In addition, it was able to do professional quality embroidery.

In 1998 Husqvarna Viking introduced its most advanced Viking sewing machine, the Husqvarna Viking Designer I. This model boasts such features as a sensor foot lift, sensor foot pressure, selective thread cutters, color touch screen and a built-in disk drive.

Husqvarna Viking has a good reputation for high quality. As with any sewing machine, you need to look at the individual features that you are researching. Here are some sewing machine reviews for Husqvarna Viking machines:
