Singer Stitch Sew Quick
Living up to its Name?

The Singer Stitch Sew Quick fared higher than many hand held sewing machines, but reviewers generally agree that it may be disappointing if you are looking for a real sewing machine.

A few owners felt that, if you were patient and worked hard to understand how to use the little sewing machine, it would be OK for small, simple projects.

But, for the most part, they agreed that you would do better to spend your money elsewhere (even though it only costs $10-20)!

There are a number of reasons why the little Singer Stitch Sew Quick handheld sewing machine just doesn't size up. Here are some of the most common complaints that I saw:

Singer Stitch Sew Quick mini hand held sewing machine

  • You must tie the ends of the thread - The stitch is a lockstitch, and the machine does not go in reverse (to tie off the stitches). If you've ever unravelled a feedsack, you understand how a lockstitch works. If you get it started, your whole seam will unravel to the end.

Many people complained of loose stitches or stitches that unravel. You must hand tie the stitches to keep them from unravelling. Most agreed that this is an annoyance at best!

  • Low clearance under the pressure plate - difficulty getting the fabric into place. Easy to snag the fabric if it is delicate.

  • Made of cheap plastic - advertised to be made of sturdy metal and plastic.

  • Needles in the package for replacement did not fit

  • Unable to sew thick or heavy fabrics - advertised to handle silk, crafts, denim, leather and wool.

  • The Singer mini sewing machine jams every few stitches - even for very experienced sewers.

  • Hard to thread

  • Needed 3 hands - Another common problem was how to hold or use the Singer hand held sewing machine. It doesn't sit on a table, it doesn't lay on your lap. Somehow you have to hold it against your body while you lift the holding plate and still not put pressure on the needle arm, and hold the fabric at the same time. It might work with a third hand or a second person!

A few reviewers reported that, even though it was extremely frustrating, they did get the mini sewing machine to operate. Some felt that the effort was worthwhile and they liked the Singer Stitch Sew Quick after they worked with it for awhile.

All in all, Singer is not living up to its reputation with this little Singer Stitch Sew Quick handheld sewing machine. If you are looking for a portable or mini sewing machine, you might do better with a proven model like the Janome Sew Mini.
