Singer Sergers
Difficulties and Strengths

Do Singer sergers measure up? Most serger reviews indicate that the Singer line of sewing machine sergers sew quite nicely – once the user has struggled with the manual and learned to use them!

If you are willing to invest the time to learn how to use the Singer overlocks, many reviewers say that you will love your new serger sewing machine.

The most common Singer overlock that was reviewed was the Singer QuantumLock 14T967DC.

And reviewers generally agreed on a number of things:

Your Sewing Machine Review

  • The Manual - Reviewers agreed that the manual is difficult to follow. It was designed to be used as an occasional reference and is not a good teaching tool for someone learning to use a serger.

However, to make things easier, you can download a better and more detailed manual for Singer sergers (It's free.) on Singer's website at www.singerco.com.

  • No Video or CD - Again, reviewers felt that high end sergers should have teaching tools to help them learn.

  • Threading - Many reviewers found this to be frustrating. The directions for the Singer Quantum overlock tell you to turn off the machine to thread it.

This turns off the light, so you must use a miner's hat (with light) or provide another external light source in order to see what you are doing when threading the machine.

The lower looper (red) is the most difficult to thread. There is an assist lever (hard to find), and once you discover where it is, threading becomes infinitely easier.

  • Functions - The Quantumlock does just about anything that a serger can do. And experienced sewers loved that! With its complexity, of course, comes more complex setups. And, in addition, each time you change stitches, you will have to reconfigure the sewing machine again.

While there is quite a learning curve for Singer sergers like this Quantumlock, many reviewers said that it is definitely worth the effort and time. Once you learn how to thread and set up this serger, it performs beautifully.

Perhaps the bottom line on these sergers is that they are best used by experienced sewers who don't mind the setups. They are definitely a challenge for beginners!
