So many sewing machine features! Trying to compare sewing machines and find the very best sewing machine can be overwhelming.
Even if you are an experienced sewer!
So, how do you simplify the process?

Step 1 decide what kind of sewing machine you need.
Which sewing projects are you looking forward to? What features would your new sewing machine need to have, in order to complete those projects?
What kind of machine has those features? A mechanical or traditional machine, a serger, an embroidery machine? When you have decided what kind of sewing machine you are searching for, you have taken a giant step to simplify the process!
Step 2 What sewing machine features are important to you--but not project-related? Here are some examples:
- Automatic needle threader – a convenience that you may or may not need.
- Automatic tension adjustment – you will never appreciate how important this can be—unless you have spent an afternoon trying to get the tension on your sewing machine—just right!
- Strong lighting – more important as you get older and your close vision gets worse, or, if you are far sighted or have low vision.
- Drop in bobbin with a clear cover – definitely nice, but probably not necessary. It does help you to know when your bobbin thread is getting low.
Step 3 Write the features that are most important to you in your notebook (the one we started when we talked about choosing the best sewing machine).
You will refer to your notes often when you are looking at a particular model. They will help you stay on track and get the best machine for you—not too complicated or expensive, but also not too simple.
