A Mini Sewing Machine for You?

While a mini sewing machine might not have all the features of a larger machine, it does have its place!

Usually about ¾ the size of its bigger sisters, a mini model is light weight, smaller and very portable.

That makes it easier to take to sewing classes, quilting bees, craft groups or on a trip when you travel.

In addition, a mini sewing machine might be the best choice as a first sewing machine for you or one of your children . Minis are usually pretty basic, often simple to understand (and easy to learn on), and they can be carried by anyone, even a child.

Janome 1117 and Janome 3125

Here's a way to get the fine Janome quality for a small price (about $110). The Janome 1117 sewing machine has 10 stitches, a built in buttonholer and a free arm – all nice features that you would find on a full size machine!

No longer available from the manufacturer, there are still quite a few available from various sewing machine stores--online or locally.

The Janome 3125 comes with 6 stitches, a built in buttonholer, a free arm, 4 point feed dog to keep the fabric straight. Made of high impact resin, it can take a beating if you plan to take this with you on outings. The Janome 3125 comes with a 10 year warranty on parts and is still readily available.

Keep in mind that these little sewing machines are somewhat limited if you plan on doing a lot of sewing or if you are not a beginner.

Kenmore Mini Ultra

This mini sew machine is recommended by a number of sewers for beginners. It rarely jams and it sews smoothly.

The Kenmore Mini-ultra has 6 stitches, a one step buttonhole and a free arm. As first sewing machines go, this one definitely does not come with many bells and whistles, and it is not recommended for serious sewers.

On the plus side, the Kenmore Mini Ultra is quite inexpensive, available for around $75.

If you are just learning to sew or plan to carry your sewing machine with you on trips or to sewing events or lessons, you just might want to consider one of the light weight, basic mini sewing machine options. Just keep in mind that there are limitations to what you can do with one of these basic economy machines.
