Janome MyLock 634d

The Janome MyLock 634d is part of the MyLock serger series which also includes both the Mylock 634D Electronic Serger and the compact Mylock 204D Serger.

The MyLocks are mechanical sergers and priced to fit most budgets.

Most Janome sewing machines are easy to use and the manual is easy to follow. The MyLock series of sergers is no exception.

These are good machines for people who have not used a serger before, and many beginners report success and happiness with their serger—even though they were initially intimidated by the threading process of a serger.

Retail list pricing runs around $899.99, but you can often find them for less.

Here are some of the features that MyLock owners like best:

  • The 634d manual is easy to follow. This is especially important for beginners.

  • Removable thread catcher – keeps the table and floor areas clean.

  • Threading guides are color coded – and threading the 634d is easy. There is a lever that you push to make threading the lower looper very easy.

  • Switching to a rolled hem feature on the Janome MyLock is simple. You do not have to switch needle plates on this serger, unlike many other sergers where this is required.

  • No fooling with tensions. - While you do have to change tensions, the manual includes recommended tensions, and they are usually right. So you don't have to fiddle with the tension to get it “just so”.

  • The Janome 634 is a sturdy workhorse that can be used daily.

  • The 634d uses regular sewing machine needles.

  • The 634 serger is totally mechanical, making it a simple machine to use.

  • Differential feed – a must if you sew specialty fabrics. It lets you sew lightweight fabrics like organza or knitted fabrics without puckering or uneven feeding.

There were only a few negatives reported by MyLock owners. The MyLock sergers do not have a coverstitch function, and the lower looper is not really self-threading, even though the official Janome site presents it as such.

So, summing up the Janome MyLock series, the Mylock 204D Serger is the compact model, the Mylock 634D Electronic Serger is the middle range workhorse, and the 644d is a step up, with 2 feed dogs in its differential feed system.

The 644d was redesigned to give extra easy access to the lower looper area.

If you're looking for a mechanical serger, check these out. Janome MyLock owners are a happy bunch, and these are good sergers for people who are just beginning to use a serger.
