History of the Janome CompanyThe company's history goes back to 1867, when William Barker and Andrew J Clark started producing a machine they called the New England Single Thread Hand Sewing Machine in Orange, Massachusetts.They later added production of what they called the Home Shuttle. Their company was named New Home, and the company continued to produce sewing machines until 1960 when it was purchased by a Japanese company, the Janome Sewing Machine Company of Tokyo, Japan. The Janome Company started producing sewing machines that had a round metal bobbin system, instead of the elongated shuttle that had been traditionally used up until that time. Thinking that the new round bobbins looked like snake eyes, they named the company Janome (pronounced Ja-NO-me), which means “eye of the snake”.
